Rabbit Hole 03:16
Ooh Ooh Pack it up, turn around This rabbit hole, we’re going down Tell me, it’s worth a peek But you can never leave Ooh Ooh Out the cave, into the bright Can’t go back, restart the night Now unplugged, across the coals No choice now, but to keep on Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh

I’ve been wasting my time Chasing all that glitters and shines I’m a fool trading my life for illusion And I think there’s something missing Something feels wrong I feel it start to crumble Here it comes Don’t you think there’s something missing? Don’t it feel wrong? The culture starts to crumble Here it comes I guess I’m all out of luck Looks like my time here is up If only I’d known then Can I start over again? Cuz I think there’s something missing Something feels wrong I feel it start to crumble Here it comes We’re just wasting our time, chasing all that glitters and shines We’re just wasting our time, chasing all that glitters and shines

The devil don’t know what to do with your love He’s never had a friend this good To always lie and cheat Like a good friend should You know the devil never gets his payday Works hard for all he creates Still no one appreciates his work The devil don’t mind, the devil don’t mind, the devil don’t mind The devil don’t mind, the devil don’t mind, the devil don’t mind The devil don’t mind the next day pain Tanqueray and cheap cocaine Cuz he knows What it’s like to feel alone The devil don’t mind my faith in God They were friends from the very start But somehow they lost touch along the way Chorus The devil don’t mind, the devil don’t mind, the devil don’t mind The devil don’t mind, the devil don’t mind, the devil don’t mind The devil don’t mind, the devil don’t mind, the devil don’t mind The devil don’t mind, the devil don’t mind, the devil don’t mind Bridge It’s okay It’s okay It don’t matter how you’re living It’s okay It’s okay He’s the one who’s not forgiven Chorus The devil don’t mind, the devil don’t mind, the devil don’t mind The devil don’t mind, the devil don’t mind, the devil don’t mind The devil don’t mind, the devil don’t mind, the devil don’t mind The devil don’t mind, the devil don’t mind, the devil don’t mind The devil don’t know what to do with your love He’s never had a friend this good To always lie and cheat Like a good friend should

General Butler We know you saw what you said you saw And people have dreams you know Ad coelum wrote your death warrant Stole with guns and gold What you never knew you owned Iced coffee and the latest issue of the New York Times Weekend trips to paradise Bombs are falling Politicians stalling Printed on the case Made in USA Made in USA Chorus And we know that there’s work to do Revolutions happen overnight What’s a man supposed to do With his gunpowder appetite? Holy Wilson You didn’t do what you said you’d do With your back against the wall Stacks of money that you loaned for power coming crashing down Unless boots hit the ground Chorus And we know that there’s work to do Revolutions happen overnight What’s a man supposed to do With his gunpowder appetite? Bridge Blinding fast, could it be the last, ready to disarm? Another false alarm Grim reaper, clawing deeper, making deals and we’re all employed Soldiers marching on Chorus And we know that there’s work to do Revolutions happen overnight What’s a man supposed to do With his gunpowder appetite? What’s a man supposed to do With his gunpowder appetite? What’s man supposed to do With this gunpowder appetite?

The people know that It’s nothing new They’re selling lies at the church and school, oh yeah Oh yeah They want your heart Your paycheck too And they don’t give a damn for you, oh no Oh no Oh no Chorus Leave it alone (Why don’t you leave it?) Leave it alone (Why don’t you leave it alone?) She said Leave it alone (Why don’t you leave it?) Leave it alone (Why don’t you leave it alone?) I can’t All the people Making the rules Some are evil, the rest are fools, oh yeah That’s right Bombs have fallen The empire too Their printing press is a wicked tool, oh yeah Oh yeah Oh yeah Chorus Leave it alone (Why don’t you leave it?) Leave it alone (Why don’t you leave it alone?) She said Leave it alone (Why don’t you leave it?) Leave it alone (Why don’t you leave it alone?) I can’t Chorus Leave it alone (Why don’t you leave it?) Leave it alone (Why don’t you leave it alone?) She said Leave it alone (Why don’t you leave it?) Leave it alone (Why don’t you leave it alone?) I won’t

I just got everything I ever wanted And it didn’t cost me a dime Now I’ll keep my head in the sand Now that everything is fine Come on raise the banner high Ain’t gonna fight you none Marching under the Hammer and Sickle Don’t it sound fun? Chorus Safe in my cage Safe in my cage Safe in my cage Spend my whole life here in the city I know the state’s my friend Outside these walls they’re all out to get me But maybe I’ll let you in I thought once, it got me in trouble Why would I think twice? Marching under the Hammer and Sickle Don’t it feel nice? Chorus Safe in my cage Safe in my cage Safe in my cage I’d give my life Pledge my allegiance With the raise of a hand Just bury me under the Hammer and Sickle And strike up the band Chorus Safe in my cage Safe in my cage Safe in my cage Safe in my cage Chorus Safe in my cage Safe in my cage Safe in my cage

Paper Chains 05:45
Doctor knows It ain’t no good More stress on a liver Than any man should But the beast inside me Is looking to feed They’re gonna let you die hanging If you live on your knees Mamma said son Better slow it down No use for a martyr in this tired old town Times have been dark since the first hint of light It’s hope that tears us down We’re going down without a fight Chorus Break off these paper chains, wake up a free man Break off these paper chains, wake up a free man Break off these paper chains, wake up a free man Break off these paper chains wake up a free man Cutting through clouds To a city made to rust Every big boom comes on the heels of a bust But what’s it worth when the sky falls? When the ground opens up? Stack it up all you want to It’ll never be enough Chorus Break off these paper chains, wake up a free man Break off these paper chains, wake up a free man Break off these paper chains, wake up a free man Break off these paper chains wake up a free man

As Solomon was aging, the people came before Please give us a king, to rule us when you’re gone His life’s work had been to help the people understand It’s not the role of a man to rule over other men Rule over other men Solomon was broken, the legacy he’d leave He cried out to God, won’t you help them to believe? This power is illusion, the need to rule is greed Your love and your light is really all they need It’s really all we need God said there’s a season for every single thing The people won’t be ready for many centuries They’ll live their lives like cattle, build fences with their hands They’ll call for the blood of strangers in distant lands They’ll ridicule the righteous, embrace evil men They’ll fall for their own tricks, again and yet again So give to them a king, and lay now in the dirt I’ll send you back again and hope in time they learn I hope in time they learn I hope in time we learn Hope, in time, we learn

This Room 03:39
I’ve been in this room before Back when I was young It’s not my home no more That feeling just won’t come Chorus Things were different then We have changed my friend Here it comes again Will it never end? I’ve walked these streets before When the world was bright and new They told us it would always be But that was never true Chorus Things were different then We have changed my friend Here it comes again Will it never end? That question’s always there What will people say? Until you finally find your fear You’re just wasting life away Chorus Things were different then We have changed my friend Here it comes again Will it never end?

The Rope 05:39
Do we know what came before us? Do we know what’s up ahead? Is there a light? Is there a forest? Has the thief become your friend? It made a victim of your father Wet wool, dry grass beneath It was faith that kept him going Strung up by belief Chorus (Instrumental) Thunder bolts and lightning Its scales no longer cold We hold the rope its climbing What if we all let go? Hey mister, what you trading? I’ll give you these for those A handshake worth a million And down the road we go Chorus (Instrumental)

about

East Texas Folk Rock Fusion is not just a long genre description; it's a musical attitude. The members of owen-glass come from unique musical backgrounds, and this stylistic marriage of pop, rock, jazz, jam, blues and indie, channeled through the iconic Solid State Logic console, leaves aside puritanical convictions about recording techniques or formulaic songwriting, and instead focuses on creating the best sound possible, given the unique skill sets of members and the limitations of location, gear and budget.

The production process for The Rope & the Rabbit involved chord-based folk songwriting that incorporates gospel-esque chorus repetition and roomy arrangements which allow for the showcasing of each individual instrumentalist.

Songwriter Kelly Wayne Conley (guitar, vocals) describes the songwriting process: "My goals were simple. I wanted to pair meaningful, cohesive lyrical themes with simple, spacious arrangements. These songs were written for this group of guys, and once they were ready I basically presented them as a sacrifice to the group. And the guys responded really well to that."

Heavily influenced by bands like Wilco and Radiohead, owen-glass bucks all notions of formulaic made-for-radio musical convention, with only three songs under four minutes appearing on the album, and several electronic and voiceover breaks, which make for an interesting and intellectually satisfying listening experience. This experimental element eludes to a persona of Sufjan Stevens' evil twin brother, and the harmony-heavy vocal arrangements layer together right in the pocket as if you're hearing fresh tracks from the late Elliot Smith.

Among all the jam folk experimental stuff, you can definitely hear that authentic southern character that fans of Tom Petty or The Band are sure to recognize.
